BWF World Junior Championships 2026: India faces away test with entirely new scoring formats

Shorter formats tend to increase upset probability by narrowing the "comeback window" that a traditional 21-point game usually allows. This is particularly noteworthy for India, a nation that typically relies on pace control and endurance to gain advantages in extended matches. Regarding the team event draw, India is seeded 5th at the Suhandinata Cup, placed in Group D1 alongside Peru and Brazil. However, the path forward could pit them directly against Indonesia in the playoff round - the nation seeded 9th in Group D2. The seeding gap here is narrow, and Indonesia remains a dominant Asian junior badminton power. India's squad structure is balanced across all five disciplines. Boys' singles includes Nishchal Chand, Dev Ruparelia, Jagsher Singh Khangurra, and Akhil Reddy Bobba. Girls' singles features Parul Choudhary, Tanvi Reddy Andluri, Shaina Manimuthu, and Tanvi Patri. Boys' doubles has two pairs: Aathish Sreenivas/Yogansh Singh and Pavan Suresh/Punith Suresh. Girls' doubles comprises Aanya Bisht/Angel Punera and Diya Bheemaiah B./Baruni Parshwal. The women's doubles pair of Aanya Bisht and Angel Punera are members of the team that won historic team bronze at the 2026 World Junior Championships in Guwahati. However, these achievements require cautious assessment. Tanvi Patri's Asian U17 title and Shaina Manimuthu's continental silver are age-group and regional level accomplishments, not yet tested at the U19 world level. The World Junior Championships is an entirely different stage where top talents from around the world converge. BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra expressed optimism, stating the team has a good chance and good momentum, with athletes having worked extremely hard.
